Sustainable Living Workshops for Adults and Children at the KL Eco Film Festival

Learn how to live sustainably by taking part in this year’s 11th Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival workshop series. The 11th Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival is an annual week-long celebration that aims to inspire, empower and celebrate all things sustainable through film screenings, a green bazaar, workshops and performances. The festival will take place from 22nd to 29th October 2018 at Publika Solaris.

This year’s line-up of workshops and activities are developed to assist the general public to live and work sustainably and also to support the national initiatives to foster the development of environmentally responsible and liveable communities in the country. The workshops are delivered by experts and designed to build skills and interest around sustainable living and the environment

“Every year, KLEFF advocates and promotes sustainable living by offering a range of exciting workshops, talks and presentations, many of which are children friendly too. With the knowledge and skills learnt in this year’s KLEFF workshops and activities, we hope that we can encourage more Malaysians to live a more environmentally kind and sustainable life,” said Mok Yi Ying, the main curator of this year’s KLEFF workshops and activities.

Community experts will be sharing techniques and experiences to enhance natural ways of urban farming and will definitely be inspiration for community groups that are keen to kick start their own urban farming project in their neighbourhood. There will also be a fun and interactive vegetable garden workshop for children which will be delivered by nature education experts, Tatana Roots.

Another fun and engaging children’s workshop will be conducted by local environmental NGO, EcoKnights where the young participants will be learning about the journey of food and food waste and the importance of and the science of composting. Delivered by composting guru, Nurul Nabila Shohimi, this workshop will have your children getting hands-on in composting simulations. Who knows, your child could be the next community sustainable living champion after this workshop!

Explore a world of hands-on fun in the world of indigenous culture and heritage with a range of fun workshops to get you acquainted with Borneo’s rich traditional art and musical elements. Enjoy a couple of hours of contemporary ethnic dance of Borneo, or bring your Sape and get some beautiful insights on how to play this indigenous musical instrument that’s like a guitar. The sape is a traditional lute of many of the Orang Ulu or “upriver people”, mainly the “Kayan” and “Kenyah” community who live in the longhouses that line the rivers of Central Borneo. Sapes are carved from a single bole of wood, with many modern instruments reaching over a metre in length.

Also, don’t miss out on the chance to be part of Merdeka Award grant recipient, Shaq Koyok’s workshop. Shaq will be teaching participants how to create their own self-portrait using indigenous narratives. Shaq Koyok was born in Kampung Pulau Kempas in Banting, Selangor. He started painting with oil pastels at five years old, using his talent as a way to express his feelings about everything that happened around him. Now, armed with an honours degree in fine arts from MARA, he has produced works reflecting his growing concern about the world and about the Orang Asli people in Malaysia. Specialising in portraits, his work has been shown in the UK, Australia and the USA. This is workshop not to be missed.

There will also be a wide range of fun upcycling workshops suitable for both adults and children. You can opt for a workshop on making your own besswax wrap, or a DIY self-watering plant system, and why not, also try making your own soap from used cooking oil.

Roll up your sleeves and kick off your shoes at this grassroots, family-friendly, hands-on, environmental festival!
