VAKA is a short documentary about the energy and resilience of the Tokelauan people as they weave their customary-wisdom regarding the environment with modern eco-technologies to respond to climate change. Tokelau was the first nation to aim for 100% of its electricity to be generated from solar as a result of the New Zealand funded Tokelau Renewable Energy Project in 2012. Their coral island atolls contribute a minimal amount of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet they are the first to be impacted by climate change. Tokelau’s resilience in their daily response to the climate crisis exemplifies how they are leading by example.

The word Himalaya means House of Snow, being the second largest icecap outside the polar regions. But, it’s melting at the fastest rate in human history. One-third of the Himalayan glaciers is projected to melt away by the end of this century due to climate change, treating the supply of water to nearly 2 billion people across South Asia. We discover how water became a major flash point between arch-rivals India and Pakistan, witness the playing of the Siachen glacier conflict between India and Pakistan, and go undercover to observe the proliferation of water thieves in Karachi. We also examine the impact of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s billion tree tsunami, Pakistan’s bold bid to mitigate worsening climate change.

In March 2019 over 150,000 Australian students went on strike to demand climate change action. They risked their studies to unite their generation, while still doing their homework. This is the story of how young Aussies defied calls to stay in school and organised one of the largest youth-led movements Australia has ever seen, told by twelve diverse students who vlogged the whole thing. These young people shared their stories of who they are and captured what it took to organise a movement. Using only footage recorded by the students, this is their story, this is Youth On Strike!

Description: Many people, especially marginalized communities were affected by the pandemic and left vulnerable in uncertain situations in terms of livelihood, economy and health – a challenge and call for NGOs in Malaysia to take action. On top of helping the nation via different initiatives, these organisations expanded their horizons in many ways to sustain themselves throughout the difficult time in order to continue their social missions.

 

In this session, the speakers will share their insight on their organisations initiatives throughout the pandemic and how they managed to sustain not only themselves but also other communities. After the sharing session, the speakers will discuss open-ended questions led by the moderator 

catering to the upcoming challenges for NGOs, roles of NGOS post-pandemic and the pandemic’s effect on the advocacy towards sustainability.

Joined by speakers that are active in eco film festivals, you will be brought into a world of different perspectives as the speakers share about the festivals’ movement to raise awareness and mobilize people in reducing climate injustice.
